Gopher Tortoise Surveying and Relocation

The gopher tortoise (Gopherus polyphemus) is the only land-dwelling turtle (tortoise) inhabiting Florida today and is protected as a threatened species under Florida Administrative Code 68A-27.003(2)(d)3. The gopher tortoise is an important keystone species in Florida's uplands and is likely to be found anywhere deep, well-drained soils and limited tree canopy occur together.

Most cities and counties in Florida require a gopher tortoise survey to be conducted as part of the development review process.

Excelsior's ecological staff hold Authorized Gopher Tortoise Agent (AGTA) permits and are authorized by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission to survey for gopher tortoises, and remove and relocate them under a Florida FWC relocation permit.
